Pembrokeshire Coast Road Trip

Back in May we joined around 30 other fellow Latitude family members for a 3-day road trip abound the Pembrokeshire coast national park.

At the end of the day, we’re all here because we love getting outside, exploring places we haven’t been before and experiencing the beautiful places available to us, both here in the UK and abroad. We know that the Latitude family, made of friends and customers, is full of like-minded people, so what better thing to do than go on a road trip with them?

With that in mind we got to work planning a road trip, what’d we need? Stunning scenery - we chose Pembrokeshire. Places to stay - we partnered with Caravan Cloud, a local business that specialises in campsites. Wonderful people - we opened up the trip to you guys!

Starting on a Thursday evening we had a casual arrival time of whenever works for you, with people travelling from all over the country. Our first night was on the eastern side of the national park, with our route taking us westbound over the following days.

The whole ethos of the trip was casual, no pressure on timings or where you want to go. We had created route cards with suggestions and recommendations, and everyone could then decide where and when they visit places, with the end destination the same in the evenings.

The first full day saw us head into the coastal town of Tenby to begin. known for its 13th-century town walls, beautiful beach and the castle looking over them.

Throughout the day other stops included manorbier beach, saint Govan's chapel & Freshwater West. People would cross paths driving between each stop, waving when they notice the Latitude tent on top of the car and then catch up at the destinations.

Our second night was at little haven retreat, not far from Haverfordwest with views over St.Brides bay. As everyone arrived throughout the late afternoon into the evening, we parked up and pitched up nice and quickly.

With everyone set up, preparing dinner and exchanging stories from the day with their neighbours, the sun set and we got the campfire going. As the light disappeared everyone gathered around the fire to get to know each other a little better and make some plans for the next day of road trippin’

The next day was clear, with blue skies and a chill in the air early morning. A shorter day of driving than the previous, but equally as much to do and see. We’d work our way around St.Brides bay, but the day started for most with either a trip down the stunning Marloes sands beach, or a boat trip around/onto Skomer island. Skomer is home to thousands of puffins, and this time of year provided a perfect opportunity to get close and observe them in their natural habitat. A wide variety of other birds live on the island, as well as seals swimming on the shores and around the boats.

Later that day we reached the UK’s smallest city - St.Davids. Out on a far west peninsula, the city has an amazing cathedral with surrounding gardens and only 1600 inhabitants! We were also treated to a coffee from local cafe and gallery Pebbles Yard, plus an ice cream each from nook icecream in the centre of the city.

From here we headed north to our final night’s stay at Hillfort Camping. A campsite set up on the coastline surrounded with rocky outcrops, an iron age fort and amazing views over the coast and Strumblehead lighthouse.

That evening we all shared a bbq we hosted and were treated to a sunset we won’t forget for some time! The ocean was perfectly still as the sun disappeared past the horizon, with everyone saying its both one of the best campsites they’d stayed on, and one of the best sunsets they’d ever seen.

Sunday morning, the final day of the trip, but certainly no less beautiful as we began the day heading to Abereiddy, more commonly known as the blue lagoon. A disused slate quarry, flooded with steep cliffs around and blue waters. A must-do if you’re in the area.

From here we headed further north along the coast, through the fishing town of Fishguard and then onto Newport beach. Here we could drive onto the beach and park up, with our journey ending as a group, some of us got together to chat about the trip, exchange contact details and think about where to go next, before heading our own separate ways.

An amazing trip had by all, with the feeling at the end collectively being we have to do another one! Thank you to everyone who came with us, thanks to Caravan Cloud for partnering with us and for their help, and Toby at nook icecream St.Davids.
